Stress Relief Lunch & Learn with Advising
December 2, 2024
by Madeline Colley ’24
The end of the semester is fast approaching, and with that comes final exams. To help students prepare, Academic Advising and Career Services will offer a free lunch and learn. Students are invited to attend on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Advising offices (upstairs in the Student Union) at the Sierra Vista Campus or on Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Douglas Campus for self-care tips to reduce stress, study strategies and free pizza.
Amy Pressler, Career Services Coordinator for Academic Advising & Career Services, says the department is available “to help students at any point during their time at Cochise. Advisors support students with registering for classes, strategies to be successful in classes, and tracking progress on graduation. The Career Advisor assists students with picking a major that aligns with their career goals, writing resumes, and preparing for interviews.”
Basically, whatever a student needs to be successful both academically and in their future careers, they are there to help. This event, in particular, is aimed at assisting students to succeed in their final exams. Pressler says, “Our department hosts events like Fall Bash, Grad Bash, Job Fairs, and we are reviving Lunch and Learn events in the hope of connecting with students in an informal and fun way.”
It might seem odd to pair the words “fun” with “final exams,” but Pressler states, “For this Lunch and Learn, we’re incorporating a little creativity with rock art painting as part of our stress reduction segment. This activity is a chance to unplug and focus on something fun and relaxing. Students get to decorate their own rock with inspiring designs, messages, or anything that brings joy. It’s a simple yet powerful way to reduce stress while taking a much-needed break from the pressures of school.”
The end of the semester is definitely a stressful time for many students, and this is a chance to focus on something that is not for a grade and give the brain a much-needed break. There’s also free pizza—and who doesn’t like free pizza?
Rock decorating and pizza aside, students will learn “the importance of a holistic approach to finals preparation, including managing stress, real self-care, and a positive mindset,” says Pressler.
Of course, stress for finals isn’t just from one thing—it can come from uncertainty about how to study or prepare for exams or low confidence as a test taker. “I believe what impacts students the most during finals is not fully understanding how to prepare and being unaware of the resources the college offers to support them,” says Pressler. Certainly, this is one great resource to help students overcome stress and set themselves up for test-taking success.
Pressler says she hopes students will come away with “a little more confidence and feel a little more at ease with upcoming finals,” after attending the Lunch and Learn. For those looking forward to attending, there is no sign-up or registration required for this session, just arrive at the start time and be ready to learn. Students are welcome to bring writing materials for note-taking if they would like, but it is not required.
Lastly, if there are any questions, students are welcome to contact Amy Pressler at presslera@cochise.edu or Lindsey Forbes at forbesl@cochise.edu.
